Introducing CM-FDI

Two decades of capital, mapped to where the clean economy is actually being built.

CM-FDI is an open, project-level database of cross-border investment in solar, wind, battery and electric-vehicle manufacturing. It is built by the Net Zero Industrial Policy Lab at Johns Hopkins University to track who is funding the global race for clean energy, and where the money is landing. Every project is sourced individually from company announcements, filings and trade press.

Four ways in

One dataset, four formats. Take whichever fits what you are trying to do.

What is in it

Greenfield and expansion projects where the investor is headquartered outside the destination economy. Each record carries its own sources, field by field.

Coverage

Announced 1997 to 2026, 65 destination economies, 28 home economies, 384 parent firms. The explorer charts from 2001 and places the single earlier project there. 213 projects are joint ventures.

What the numbers are

Announced or reported capital in US$ millions. 111 of 926 projects are announced without a value and read as zero, which is a gap in disclosure rather than a project without capital behind it.

Basis

853 of 926 projects are manufacturing; the rest are R&D, design and logistics. The working paper's regressions use the manufacturing subset. The explorer counts all activities, and every figure states which basis it is on.
